ECO Design Certification

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is part of the rules package introduced under the 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan, which is a core component of the European Green Deal. It came into force on July 18, 2024.

The new EU Sustainable Products Regulation replaces the previous 2009/125/EC Ecodesign Directive. Focused on products with a significant environmental impact, the EU ESPR aims to double the circularity rate of materials used within the EU.

Aligned with the goals of an environmentally sustainable and circular economy, ESPR marks a significant milestone in the EU's sustainable production initiative. By improving the circularity and energy efficiency of products circulating in the EU market, it contributes to fostering sustainable business models, practices, and a competitive, resilient market at all levels.

Under the requirements of ECO Design (ESPR), a sustainable product should be characterized as follows:

  • Consumes less energy
  • Has a longer lifespan
  • Is easily repairable
  • Contains parts that can be disassembled and reused
  • Includes no harmful substances or minimal amounts of them
  • Is easily recyclable and/or contains more recycled content
  • Has a lower carbon and environmental footprint throughout its lifecycle
  • Offers better availability of information regarding its sustainability
